Although I'm a digital artist by trade, doing traditional artwork keeps me sharp, observant, and teaches me new things about the world around me.

I've been doing lifedrawing since I was in high school, and when the opportunity arose, I asked my work to run weekly sessions.  I consider lifedrawing like going to the gym; I have to do it to keep my brain in shape.  The human figure is the hardest thing to draw, since everyone notices when there's something wrong -- you can't fudge anything.

My work in pastel is mostly plein-air these days.  Pastel is a great medium for this, with little mess and no drying time.  Working in pastel improves my sense of composition and colour, teaches me about lighting, and gives me a connection with the landscape that is impossible to reproduce in front of the computer.

My focus as a technical artist has always been surfacing, whether that be texturing or creating shaders.  Photography is the perfect medium for closely observing and storing records of unique materials and lighting conditions.  Although I frequently take photos for texture work, I've only included in this portfolio work that can stand on its own merits.
